Descalcificadores domésticos en Canarias: cómo elegir para tu hogar

Limescale on shower screens, white marks on taps and questions about protecting your water heater or washing machine: before buying a domestic water softener, identify the problem with your household water and the equipment your family needs.

Limescale deposits on a household bathroom tap

When might your home need a water softener?

Water hardness is mainly associated with dissolved calcium and magnesium. Accumulated mineral deposits can cause scale in pipes and equipment that heats water. Soap may also produce less lather. The EPA technical sheet on water softeners explains these effects and notes that not every home needs a water softener.

At home, these situations justify checking water hardness:

  • Shower screens and taps develop white deposits again after cleaning.
  • Tap aerators need frequent cleaning because of scale deposits.
  • The water heater or other appliances develop problems that a technician attributes to mineral deposits.
  • You want to assess a whole-home solution when renovating the water system.

Low flow or a fault does not, by itself, prove excessive limescale. Blockages, insufficient pressure or appliance wear may also be responsible. Do not replace diagnosis with a purchase.

What a domestic water softener does and what it does not solve

Ion exchange water softeners reduce calcium and magnesium using a resin that exchanges them for sodium or potassium. The resin must be regenerated, a process that uses salt and water. This is explained by the EPA in its explanation of cation exchange water softeners.

Water softening does not establish that water is safe to drink. This treatment does not certify that water is safe to drink or replace specific treatments for other contaminants. Sediment filters, activated carbon units, reverse osmosis systems and water softeners serve different purposes. The solution depends on water analysis and the intended use.

How to choose a water softener for your home

1. Check incoming water hardness

Request supply information or have the water hardness measured in your home. Record the unit and date. If the water source varies, or storage tanks and blending are involved, tell the professional so they can determine when to repeat the measurement.

Don't choose the equipment solely based on the water's taste, stains, or conductivity readings: you need to know the hardness specifically.

2. Assess consumption and simultaneous flow

State the number of occupants, usual consumption and uses that may coincide, such as showers and the washing machine. Two homes with the same number of occupants may need different configurations. Ask for a proposal explaining the usable capacity and expected service flow for your system.

3. Check the installation location

  • Space dimensions and convenient access for adding salt and carrying out servicing.
  • Point of water entry, diameter of connections, and available pressure.
  • A suitable drain for regeneration and an electrical supply if the model requires one.
  • Bypass to isolate the equipment during maintenance.
  • Which circuits should be treated and which should remain untreated, according to their use.

The installation must comply with the manufacturer's instructions and the applicable requirements of the location. A professional must check the connections and the drainage of the regeneration water.

4. Request a complete quote

Compare equipment including installation, commissioning, consumables, regeneration water, servicing, warranty and spare parts availability. A catalogue price without these details does not establish the operating cost. Ask for written confirmation of what the service includes and which maintenance tasks are the owner’s responsibility.

Maintenance: what a family should know

Provide convenient access to the salt tank and follow the servicing schedule specified for your unit. Check the salt level, look for accumulations or salt bridges that prevent its use, and arrange the required cleaning and maintenance. The WaterSense home maintenance guide recommends maintaining these systems and favouring demand-based regeneration over a fixed schedule where the equipment supports it.

After commissioning, keep the manual and the hardness setting used. If scale returns, have the salt, bypass, equipment alerts and outlet hardness checked by the technical service. Do not change settings at random or add products outside the manufacturer’s instructions.

Frequently asked questions about domestic water softeners

Do I need a water softener if I see limescale on my shower screen?

It is a reason to check water hardness, not enough evidence to select a model. Assess how often deposits appear and measure the water before deciding whether to treat the whole home.

Does a salt-free system eliminate hardness?

Do not confuse water conditioning with removing calcium and magnesium. Ask for a technical sheet specifying the mechanism, measurable result and limitations. The EPA guide to choosing household water treatments distinguishes water softeners from water conditioners.

How much does installation cost?

The cost depends on the equipment, capacity, connections, access and work required. Request an itemised quote for your home and compare maintenance costs too. Quoting a price without checking these factors can be misleading.

Is softened water safe to drink?

Water softening does not prove that water is safe to drink. Incoming water quality and the treatment configuration must be assessed for the intended use. If you need drinking water, make this clear at the start of your enquiry.

Does the equipment immediately remove existing limescale?

Do not expect the existing encrustations to disappear on their own. Cleaning and inspection of appliances or pipes must be evaluated separately and follow the instructions of their manufacturers.
